I hope you had a delightful Valentine's Day. When we were in the floral business, Valentine's Day was one of the biggest holidays for florists. In 1976, it was our first holiday in the business. Please welcome back multi-talented author, professor, blogger and reviewer, Jacqui Murray. Read her bio after the articles. You'll be amazed.
Her focus at the moment is on prehistoric fiction with her saga, Man vs. Nature. It’s a series of trilogies set in seminal times of man’s evolution. The first is Dawn of Humanity, about Homo habilis, with one book completed, Born in a Treacherous Time. The second in the trilogy, Against All Odds, will be out 2021. The second trilogy, featuring Homo erectus, is Crossroads with the first two books out, Survival of the Fittest and Quest for Home. The third and final, In the Footsteps of Giants, will be out Winter 2021.

I'm also eagerly anticipating your trilogy about when the super-volcano Toba erupted. So much of evolution in the world is based on contingency. If that tiny group of survivors hadn't made it, we and all that has come from us wouldn't be here. Good luck to both of you with your writing!

Valentine's Day is a big one for florist! Jacqui writes about those who must change to survive. I think that remains true today.

How lovely to find Jacqui featured here with this fascinating series of books. I have a question for Jacqui that popped into my head: When you write a series in the same setting and featuring the same people, how do you keep the descriptions fresh in each book. In other words, how much attention do you give to describing the people and places in the subsequent books to keep the books stand alone and yet part of a series?
That's great news--that you like the license. I loved the hope and light that the artist displayed, despite the challenges of those times.

What a great question. I struggled with that at first and then analyzed how other authors did that in series. Sometimes, they did a quick summary of important facts. Sometimes, they provided tantalizing hooks--maybe to get readers to read the earlier books. Other times, when something wasn't terribly relevant to the story, they skipped it. I did a hybrid of all three.

You make a good point about changing to survive. I go by that old adage "Necessity is the mother of invention." Thank goodness humans have brains to invent what we need to survive and thrive.

Thanks for asking that question, Robbie. I am not a series writer for exactly that reason. I'm sure I would mess up a description from a previous book and the readers would get upset with me. I'm a scaredy cat to attempt that challenge.

Thank you, both, for your responses. The idea of writing a serial was presented to me again today. I just don't know if I want to do it. I like writing stand alone books. Serials seem like more effort somehow, but in a way I don't really enjoy. You do it well, Jacqui, as I have never felt anything in your books is repetitive.
Serials do seem to be a daunting task. But, go ahead and try. You may love making up those stories using the same characters. You could really develop the situations and the characters.
I think it's whatever suits you. That's interesting that you think standalones are less effort! I have to think about that.
