January 6 question - Being a writer, when you're reading someone else's work, what stops you from finishing a book/throws you out of the story/frustrates you the most about other people's books?
Reading through excessive typos and awkward sentences are my first thoughts to answer this question of what stops me from reading a book. I say that, and yet, I know I am not perfect. I can read my ms 100 times looking for errors. I still have not conquered removing or adding a period, comma, quotation marks from the pages. So I do give the author the benefit of the doubt if I discover some mistakes. Excessive is the operative word here.
Otherwise, I give up on a book filled with too many characters. If I have to constantly page back through the story to remind me of the role the character plays, then I quit. I don't want to work to read a story. I want to sit back, relax and enjoy the author's creation.

Thank you for stopping here at the Focused on Story Blog with JQ Rose.
So glad you're enjoying your memoir release. A huge congrats. I don't like reading books with too many characters or typos too. And I need a story with a fast-paced plot.
Congratulations on the publication of Arranging a Dream. I plan to get it on my kindle and read it ASAP. It must be a wonderful moment for you. I peeked inside and was quite taken with what I saw. Happy New Year and thank you for hosting the blog hop this month.
Congratulations on the publication of your memoir. I will get the ebook on my Kindle as it seems like a fascinating read from what I could tell. Thank you for hosting the blog hop and here's wishing you a wonderful 2021.
Thank you, Natalie. The "after glow" is so different from publishing a book of fiction. We are wallowing in nostalgia and loving it with friends on FB and our buddies we have known since the good old days.
Thank you for orderingthe book. I still am amazed with that pre-order service. Order the book and forget it until it magically appears on my Kindle. Happy 2021 to you too!
Congratulations on writing your memoir. From the preview, your story looks captivating -- as charming as the cover. Also, your comments about excessive characters made me smile -- as some readers have called for lists of characters in my books! Have a very good 2021 ahead.
A memoir is quite an undertaking. I wouldn't know where to start. Congrats on getting that done!
Like you, I'm always disappointed if an author who has spent months on a manuscript, doesn't have the finished product edited well. That seems like such a waste.
Congratulations, J.Q. on your wonderful memoir. I enjoy reading it.
I stop reading a book if cats and dogs are a major focus. I stop reading a book if it is simply boring. Lots of books are. I don't enjoy having a body appear in a mystery in the first chapter. I don't read to look for writing mistakes, so if I find some and actually I find a misspelling in practical every book including classics, it doesn't bother me. I underline the word and continue.
Hey, Lee, you can start anywhere you want. Pick a topic like food, travel, books, holidays...and go. The easiest way to start is to write about stories told around the table at family dinners. Lots of fodder there. Try it. You(and your family) will like it.
Thank you, Susan. Glad you are enjoying the memoir!! I find as an author, I try to read a book without editing. If it's a great story where I am truly involved, I can do that.

Oh yes! Too many characters really gets me too! It's hard to create a picture when the mind is jumping from name to name. Happy IWSG Day!

I keep forgetting to tell you that your cover is beautiful. I look at it and instantly have a happy feeling. Congratulations. Best to you in 2021~!
Agree on excessive typos. I have become more patient with excessive characters now that I can search in a digital book. Who was that???

Thank you, Kalpana. I am enjoying this part of the writing job! So happy you want to read the book. I appreciate your kind words.
Good. I thought I had problems with my attention span when I couldn't keep all the characters straight!!!

Oh I love that you let us watch you open your box of books. And what wonderful books they are. Many congrats, Cuz.
Congrats on releasing your memoir. How exciting to open the box! Wishing you much success.
Congrats with the new release! I agree about too many characters making reading a chore instead of a relaxing adventure.
