What's the strangest thing you've ever googled in researching a story?
The strangest thing I ever googled was the Darknet. In 2013, not many people were aware of the existence of the Darknet.

I read an article about the secret web. I didn't believe it because it sounded like something in a spy novel, not in real life. But, sure enough, this amazing concept was a reality. I found it to be an excellent way to ......Oh, sorry I can't tell you since it would be a spoiler in my romantic suspense novel, Deadly Undertaking. (See how I wove this shameless plug into the IWSG blog post?)
In 2020 we have a window named "incognito," so browsing will remain secret and no one knows who is using it for searches. Doesn't that sound so James Bondish?
And yet, the incognito window is something to use while browsing for keywords for your latest book or to update your older books. Keywords will pop up from everywhere not based on your browsing history. The search will reveal words beyond your personal interests. It isn't the Darknet, but I do feel like a secret agent when snooping in the incognito mode, and it feels great!

Click on the 3 stacked dots on the right of your Google search bar. You can choose the incognito window from the drop-down menu to go underground. Now, remember to keep it under your hat, kiddo. <wink>

Hi,
Yes, I do know about the Dark Net, but I have never used it. Here in Germany, there is a lot of illegal activities that take place over the Dark Net. I have never heard of Incognito. I think that regardless of whether it is Dark Net or incognito, a writer needs to have a good reason for researching on such platforms because of how they are frequently used.

I'm never sure how far you can go before you wind up on the Darknet. I do use incognito mode (although it won't stop the police, or your boss from finding out, if you're up to things.) And I have used encrypted browsers.
That last search item about circumventing the system is a real whistle blower! No one has come knocking at your door yet, have they?
My current series involves historical erotica--sexy images and stories, some of them transgressive even by today's standards. Sometimes I remember to search incognito, sometimes not. So far, the G Men haven't come for me. I wish you happy writing in November!
I am so going to use that Incognito feature! I'd asked my husband last year if there was a way to visit websites without registering a visit.
I read about Darknet... in some thriller novels, I think. I thought it was fictional.

Yes, Pat. I stay off of them. Bad company on the darknet, but I do use the incognito window for finding keywords.

I've heard about the Darknet via TV and movies. Although I assumed it's real, I've never researched it. You're braver than I am.
Darknet search sounds interesting. I have never tried incognito but will plan to now. Happy Belated IWSG!
I've heard of the Darknet several times but I've never been on it and don't plan to. With all the crime going through it I'm afraid my computer would get hacked! Still, fascinating. I can see how it would be great inspiration for spy and suspense ("thriller" as they call it now) fiction.

Incognito gives you searches you would never get when still having your search history. Happy REALLY belated IWSG back at ya!
